Neurophysiology
Understanding the electric brain.
Explore the diagnostic power of EEG, nerve conduction studies and electromyography. We bridge the gap between complex electrical theory and practical clinical application in patient care.

A Day in the Life
- Assessing patients with neurological symptoms.
- Performing tests such as EEGs, EMGs, and nerve conduction studies.
- Monitoring brain and nerve activity and interpreting results.
- Working with neurologists and other healthcare professionals to diagnose conditions.
- Documenting findings and discussing results with the medical team.
Subspecialties
- EEG / epilepsy
- EMG & nerve conduction studies
- Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM)
- Sleep neurophysiology
- Evoked potentials
- Autonomic neurophysiology
- Pediatric neurophysiology
- Neuromuscular neurophysiology
- Neurocritical care / ICU neurophysiology
- Long-term video-EEG monitoring
Career and Training
- Core training – several routes can lead into Clinical Neurophysiology:
- IMT – usually 2 years for this specialty
- ACCS-IM – 3 years
- Core Surgical Training – 2 years
- Core Paediatrics – 3 years, with the required paediatric competencies/exams
- National recruitment to Clinical Neurophysiology – entry is at ST3, followed by an indicative 4 years of higher specialty training (ST3–ST6)
- ST3–6 Clinical Neurophysiology – training covers EEG, NCS/EMG, evoked potentials, adult and paediatric neurophysiology, and advanced electrophysiology and intraoperative monitoring
- CCT – completion of training allows entry onto the GMC Specialist Register and progression to consultant practice
Current & Future
- AI & machine learning – automated EEG/EMG interpretation and seizure detection.
- Advanced EEG & epilepsy – high-density EEG, source localisation and seizure prediction.
- Brain–computer interfaces – translating neural signals into movement, communication or prosthetic control.
- Neurostimulation – DBS, cortical stimulation and closed-loop therapies.
- Sleep neurophysiology – advanced monitoring and personalised sleep-disorder treatment.
- Intraoperative monitoring – real-time monitoring of neural function during surgery.
- Digital/mobile neurophysiology – wearable and home-based EEG/physiological monitoring.
- Precision neurophysiology – integrating electrophysiology with imaging and other biomarkers.
